Ahmedabad has taken a major step onto the global sports stage after officially being named the host city for the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Indian city promises to shape the next 100 years of the event while celebrating its rich sporting history and cultural spirit.

Ahmedabad Confirmed as Host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games
Ahmedabad, also known locally as Amdavad in Gujarat, was officially approved as the host of the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games during the 2025 General Assembly held in Glasgow. The confirmation came after 74 Commonwealth member nations voted in favour, following a recommendation from the evaluation committee. The city outperformed Abuja, Nigeria, in the final round, although officials revealed that as many as five countries had shown interest at the beginning of the bidding process.
The Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games will feature between 15 and 17 sports, significantly more than the 10 scheduled for next year’s scaled-down Games in Glasgow. Popular sports such as athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls, and weightlifting—along with their Para-sport events—are already confirmed. Artistic gymnastics, boxing, and netball are also included in the plan for the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Other sports currently under review are archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon, and wrestling. Ahmedabad will also be allowed to propose up to two new or traditional Indian sports for the event, which will be held in October 2030 to suit weather conditions. Organisers plan to rely mainly on existing stadiums and facilities, requiring only minor upgrades for the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games.
P.T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, said the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games will be more than just a centenary celebration. According to her, the Games will bring together athletes, cultures, and communities from across the Commonwealth in the spirit of growth and unity. She added that the event aims to set the tone for the next century of the Commonwealth sporting movement.
A New Era for Commonwealth Sport
The Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games will mark 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada. Although Canada was once expected to bid, it ultimately chose not to pursue hosting rights. India, which first hosted the event in 2010, now returns to the spotlight as the world’s most populous nation prepares for another major sporting challenge.
Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare noted that the world has changed significantly since the last Indian edition, and the organisation has learned valuable lessons from the experiences of 2010. He praised Ahmedabad’s plans to use mostly existing venues, saying it reflects a more sustainable and modern approach for the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Rukare also spoke about the challenges faced by the Commonwealth Games in recent years. Glasgow stepped in to host the 2026 edition after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew due to rising costs. Singapore later opted not to bid for 2026, creating uncertainty about the event’s future. Rukare admitted there was a moment when officials questioned what direction the movement might take. However, Glasgow’s quick response helped stabilise the situation.
He added that the successful planning for the Glasgow 2026 Games and the confirmation of Ahmedabad as the 2030 host marks the beginning of a “new golden era” for Commonwealth Sport. He expressed confidence that the Games are entering their next century in strong shape. The Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games promises to be a landmark event, blending tradition, modern facilities, and global participation.
At the most recent Games, held in Birmingham in 2022, Australia topped the medal table followed by England, Canada, India, and New Zealand.
